What to expect during treatment

 Elevating the ordinary.

Starting treatment can feel a little nerve-wracking, and that’s completely normal. We’re here to guide you every step of the way. Below are a few helpful things to keep in mind before your first appointment, so you can arrive feeling confident, comfortable, and prepared.

How to Prepare for Your Electrology Appointment

Proper preparation helps make your electrology treatment more effective, comfortable, and successful. Here are a few important steps to take before your session:

Let Your Hair Grow

Hair needs to be visible for effective treatment.
A minimum of three days of growth is recommended.
This allows your electrologist to clearly see and properly treat each hair. Avoid plucking, waxing, threading, or using depilatory creams between sessions. Shaving may be allowed depending on the treatment area—always ask if you're unsure.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate 💧

Drinking plenty of water before your appointment is one of the best natural pain relievers. Well-hydrated skin allows the electrical current to travel more effectively, making treatment more comfortable and more efficient. Aim to drink extra water starting the day before your session.

Pain Management Options

If you're concerned about discomfort, you may consider:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen

  • Topical numbing creams, such as lidocaine-based products

Both oral pain relievers and topical numbing creams should be taken or applied about 30 minutes before your appointment to allow enough time for absorption and effectiveness.

Additional Tips

  • Avoid caffeine before treatment, as it can increase skin sensitivity.

  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat a light meal beforehand.

  • Arrive relaxed — stress and tension can increase discomfort.

What to Expect

  • Mild redness, swelling, or pinpoint scabbing can occur — this is a normal part of healing.

  • Tiny scabs should never be picked, as this can cause pigmentation changes dents in your skin or scarring.

  • Most reactions resolve within 24–72 hours.

Skin Care Tips

  • Keep the area clean and dry.

  • Gently cleanse using a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.

  • Apply a light, soothing moisturizer if dryness occurs.

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) once the skin has calmed, especially on the face.

Electrology Aftercare Instructions

Proper aftercare is essential to promote healing, reduce irritation, and prevent complications. Your skin may appear red, slightly swollen, or tender following treatment — this is completely normal and usually subsides within a few hours to a couple of days.

Immediately After Treatment

  • Avoid touching the treated area unless your hands are clean.

  • Apply a soothing product recommended by your electrologist, such as witch hazel, aloe vera, or a post-electrology calming gel.

  • Use a clean, cool compress if needed to reduce redness or swelling.

For the First 24–48 Hours

To protect your skin and prevent irritation:

  • Avoid heat: No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, or intense workouts.

  • Avoid makeup and heavy skincare products on treated areas.

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds.

  • Do not touch, scratch, or pick at the treated area.

  • Avoid swimming in pools, lakes, or oceans.

What to Avoid Between Appointments

  • Do not pluck, wax, thread, or use depilatory creams.

  • Shaving or trimming may be allowed — ask your electrologist for guidance.

  • Avoid exfoliating treated areas for several days.
